Francisco Vasquez de Coronado was a Spanish explorer born in Salamanca. He was born in 1510 and died in 1540. He had 8 children and a wife called Beatriz de Estrada. At the age of 25, he went on a journey to Mexico with Antonio de Mendoza. He liked the place so decided to live there. In 1535 he married his wife Beatriz de Estrada. After 5 years of living there he was chosen to lead an expedition to find the seven hidden cities of gold in Cibola. He went on this expedition because he heard a rumor from a guy called Fray Marcos, that there are seven gold cities in North Mexico. Of course that caught his and Mendoza’s interest and got chosen to lead that expedition. On his journey, he met the Zuni tribe, Hopi tribe, Arizona tribe, Pecos tribe, and the Wichita tribe. The natives didn’t like him, because Coronado wanted them to be Christians, but the natives refused, and hated Coronado. Coronado killed LOTS of natives on his expedition. On his journey he found and discovered the Rio Grande River, southern Rocky Mountains and the Grand Canyon. Well actually 3 of his men found the Grand Canyon. He also met a native which he called ‘the Turk’. The native told them about a rich town called Quivira (or Wichita). So Coronado took him as guide, and when they reached the town, it turned out not to be rich at all! When he returned to New Spain (Mexico) only 100 of his men came back. His expedition was a complete Failure, because they didn’t find any Gold! His journey took 2 years, till he returned to New Spain.Even though he didn’t find any gold, and Mendoza was disappointed, he knew that Coronado worked hard, so made him Governor of New Spain. On his Journey he traveled through: Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Kansas. So when he was back in Mexico, he was still governor, until 1544, when they found him guilty of bad behavior against Indians. HE DIED AFTER 10 YEARS WHEN HE FINISHED HIS EXPEDITION!
Religion was Roman Catholic.
Born in a noble family left home because his parents promised fortune to his big brother ,not him.
he thought he was going to get executed or lashed because of not finding any gold.
